Installing the Preliminary Release of Microsoft® Windows® Code Name "Longhorn"

This document provides general information and step-by-step instructions for installing Microsoft® Windows® Code Name "Longhorn."

Note

This is a pre-release of a product that is under development. Any or all installation instructions might change.
Information you must provide during the installation process
During the installation process, you will be asked for the three things listed in this section. Be sure to have the disc and information ready to provide when you are asked for them.

"Longhorn" installation disc (DVD).
Product key (25 characters). You can find your product key sticker on the installation disc folder.
Name of your computer. You'll need to provide this if your computer is currently connected to a network. To find your computer's name, click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. On the Computer Name tab, your computer's name is displayed after Full computer name.
Upgrading to "Longhorn"
The option to upgrade is not available in this pre-release version of "Longhorn." You must perform a custom (clean) installation or a dual-boot installation.

Installing "Longhorn"
Important

Before installing "Longhorn," be sure to remove all antivirus software. It's also good to run the Windows Memory Diagnostic tool to test your computer's random access memory (RAM). To use the Windows Memory Diagnostic tool, follow the instructions at the Microsoft website.
Custom (clean) installation
When you use the custom (clean) installation option to install "Longhorn," your existing version of Windows, including all of the files and settings, is automatically replaced. You must manually reinstall your programs when the "Longhorn" installation is done.

Choose this method if:

your computer does not have an operating system installed,
your computer is running a version of Windows other than Windows XP and you want to replace that operating system with "Longhorn," or
you want to delete your current operating system, partition your hard disk, and install "Longhorn" on a specific partition.
To perform a custom (clean) installation

Insert the "Longhorn" installation disc into the computer's DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer.
When the message "Press any key to boot from CD" appears, press a key. Windows installation begins.
If you have an x64-based computer, you might see a blank screen for long time. It can take 20 minutes or longer before the next screen appears. Do not turn off your computer or restart it during this time.
After the blank screen, you will see a progress bar at the bottom of the screen. This stage might also take some time to complete.
On the Install Windows menu, click Install now.
On the Install Windows page, click Next.
On the Type your product key page, type the 25-character product key. You can find your product key sticker on the installation disc folder.
On the Please read and accept the License Terms page, if you accept the license terms, click I accept the License Terms.
On the Which type of installation do you want? page, click Custom.
On the Your installation settings page, change any settings that you want to change.
To install "Longhorn" on a partition, click Install Windows on this drive, and then follow the instructions on the screen. If you don't partition your hard disk, click Start Installation.
Continue to follow the instructions on your screen.
Dual-boot configuration with Windows XP
If you want to have more than one operating system on the same computer, you can install "Longhorn" on a specific partition. (This is called a dual-boot or multiboot configuration.) If you do this, be sure to install "Longhorn" on a different partition from the partition where your current version of Windows is installed.

Choose this method if you want to keep your current Windows XP installation and you have an available drive or partition.

To install a dual-boot configuration with Windows XP

Insert the "Longhorn" installation disc into your computer's DVD-ROM drive.
The Install Windows menu should appear automatically. If not, click Start, and then click My Computer. Double-click the drive containing the DVD, and then click setup.exe.
To choose where to install Windows, click Install Windows on this drive, and then follow the instructions on the screen.
Continue to follow the instructions on your screen.
Important

Be sure to reinstall your antivirus software after the installation is completed.

Informations supplémentaires pour anglophones :

*****************************************************************************
"Readme"
for Windows Code Name "Longhorn" Beta 1
and Windows Server Code Name "Longhorn" Beta 1
*****************************************************************************

=============================================================================
Before You Install Microsoft Windows Code Name "Longhorn" Beta 1 or Microsoft
Windows Server Code Name "Longhorn" Beta 1
=============================================================================

This document contains important information you should read before you install
the Beta 1 release of Microsoft® Windows® Code Name "Longhorn" or Microsoft
Windows Server™ Code Name "Longhorn." Unless otherwise specified, these notes
pertain to both products.

For important information that you should know before you install "Longhorn"
versions of Windows, see setup.htm in the \Docs folder of the DVD.

For important information that you should know after you install "Longhorn"
versions of Windows, see relnotes.htm in the \Docs folder of the DVD.

=============================================================================
General
=============================================================================
The Supplemental Driver Pack for this release of "Longhorn" versions of Windows
includes a select group of critical Microsoft Windows® XP drivers that help
your system start and also help provide network connectivity.
This installer runs automatically when the "Longhorn" version of Windows
installation completes. It attempts to match Windows XP drivers for devices that
are found on your computer but that are not currently supported in the Beta 1
release of "Longhorn" versions of Windows operating systems. Running the
Supplemental Driver Pack installer does not guarantee full device coverage.

If you cancel the installation of the Supplemental Driver Pack, you can restart
the installation at any time by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
Alternately, you can start the installer by running Dpupdate.exe from the
\Drivers\x86 directory (for 32-bit computers) or the \Drivers\x64 directory (for
64-bit computers) on the installation medium. For more help with the installer,
at the command line, type: dpupdate /help.

When upgrading to "Longhorn" versions of Windows from Microsoft Windows® 2000,
Windows XP, or Microsoft Windows Server™ 2003, files that have been cached on
the local computer using Offline Files will not be maintained. If you use
Offline Files to cache local copies of files, and make changes to those files
while disconnected from the network, those changes will be lost when you perform
an upgrade. To work around this issue, synchronize all Offline Files before
upgrading to "Longhorn" versions of Windows.

=============================================================================
Setup
=============================================================================
When using the Load driver option during Setup, the following restrictions
apply:

* If you must load more than one storage driver during Setup by clicking Load
driver, only select one driver at a time. To load more than one driver, add
the first driver and click Next, then repeat the Load driver option for each
additional driver.

* In this release of "Longhorn" versions of Windows, you will be unable to
install mass storage drivers by using the Load driver option on computers with
less than 256 MB of memory. To work around this problem, add the additional
drivers to the Windows Preinstallation Environment (Windows PE) before running
Setup. Refer to the Windows Automated Installation Kit for more details about
adding drivers to Windows PE.

* In "Longhorn" versions of Windows, Unattended Setup does not support
additional drivers. If you must add drivers that are not supplied by
"Longhorn" versions of Windows you must perform an attended (interactive)
setup.

If you install the Beta 1 version of this product on a computer that already has
an existing operating system, Setup will not remove the previously installed
operating system from the boot menu. The previously installed operating system
will still appear to be a valid choice on the boot menu, but it might not start.
This release of "Longhorn" versions of Windows does not support a multiple boot
configuration with versions of operating systems prior to Windows 2000 Service
Pack 4 (SP4).

Setup in this release of "Longhorn" versions of Windows cannot be initiated from
operating systems earlier than Windows 2000 SP4. Setup is not blocked from
running on earlier operating systems, and the entries in the startup menu are
maintained; however, the earlier operating systems will not start due to
underlying changes in folder structure. There currently is no solution to this
issue.

=============================================================================
Storage
=============================================================================
Setup in this release of "Longhorn" versions of Windows does not support
installing to "RAW" disks (disks without a partition). To work around this
issue, install the "Longhorn" version of Windows on a partitioned disk. If you
must install to a RAW disk, press SHIFT+F10 to open a command prompt. Use the
Diskpart utility to create a disk partition. Restart the computer after creating
the partition, and start Setup again. The disk should be available for use.

=============================================================================
Display
=============================================================================
This note applies only to Windows "Longhorn," not Windows Server "Longhorn."
The graphic device drivers included in Windows "Longhorn" Beta 1 do not support
the ATI X700 AGP or X800XL AGP graphics devices. Because the PCI-Express
versions of these graphics devices are supported, and the AGP versions have the
same device ID, Windows "Longhorn" will attempt to install the PCI-Express
version of the driver. This can result in a black display screen on computers
with the X700 AGP or the X800XL AGP devices. To work around this problem, start
your computer in VGA display mode and install the latest ATI Catalyst XDDM
display driver.

=============================================================================
Security
=============================================================================
The Beta 1 release of "Longhorn" versions of Windows does not preserve
cryptographic private keys or certificates when you are performing an upgrade.
This includes upgrading from one "Longhorn" version of Windows to another.
Failure to backup your private keys and certificates prior to performing an
upgrade to the Beta 1 release of "Longhorn" versions of Windows can result in an
inability to decrypt data encrypted with the Encrypting File System (EFS) or
encrypted e-mail in Microsoft Outlook®.

To back up certificates and private keys

1. Open Microsoft Internet Explorer.
2. Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options.
3. Click the Content tab. In the Certificates section, click Certificates.
4. Click the Personal tab. There might be multiple certificates listed if you
have certificates installed for other purposes.
5. Click one certificate, and click Export, and then click Next.
6. Click Yes, export the private key, and then click Next.

Note:
Some private keys or certificates might not be exportable. If you have
private keys or certificates that cannot be exported, you should cancel
the export process and not upgrade the current operating system to the
Beta 1 release of "Longhorn" versions of Windows.

7. Click Enable Strong Protection, and then click Next.
8. In Password, type the password to use to protect the private key. In Confirm
Password, type the password again, and then click Next.
9. In File name, type the path and name of the file that will contain the backup
of the certificate, and then click Next.
10.Click Finish to perform the export.
Note:
Repeat Steps 5 through 10 for each certificate if you have more than one
installed.

To restore certificates in "Longhorn" versions of Windows

1. Open the folder containing the certificate backup files. Double-click a
certificate backup file to start the Certificate Import Wizard. Click Next.
2. In File name, confirm the correct file name, and then click Next.
3. In Password, type the password you assigned to the backup file, and then click
Next.
4. Click Next to accept the default location for the imported certificate.
5. Click Finish to complete the import.

Note:
The backup files for your certificates should be maintained in a safe
place in case of future upgrades.

When using the Secure Startup feature of in this release of "Longhorn" versions
of Windows, the following apply:

* This release requires at least two disk partitions to enable the use of the
Secure Startup feature.

* When enabling the Secure Startup feature, the boot order listed in the
computer's basic input/output system (BIO) must list the system partition
containing the boot manager as the first boot option.

* There must be no bootable CD or DVD in the computer for the first startup
after enabling Secure Startup. If a bootable CD or DVD is present, the Trusted
Platform Module (TPM) will measure the boot manager present on the CD or DVD.
When the disc is later removed from the computer, your "Longhorn" version of
Windows will no longer start.

* If Secure Startup is enabled, inserting a bootable floppy disk, Universal
Serial Bus (USB) device, CD, or DVD will prevent your "Longhorn" version of
Windows from starting.
